Please read our terms and conditions With V5C, HPI clear AA badge & St Christopher on dash will be retained (shown in photos) View video Information from the owner: General History up to 2024 This car was bought new in November 1933 by my father, then a serving Flying Officer with the RAF who had just returned from a 3 year posting with No 27 Squadron in the North Western Frontier region of India (now the Pakistan/Afghanistan border areas) flying the Westland Wapiti” 2 seater Bomber/Army support aircraft and had saved enough to pay the £200 for his new J2 At the time he was based at RAF Henlow and during the 6 month guarantee period there was a good bit of correspondence between him and the MG company, I have copies of the Abingdon responses from which it seems that he had problems with performance 'maximum speed only 68 mph' and other small matters including vibration. It seems that in April 1934 a new gearbox and remote were fitted plus new front engine bearings etc. These seem to have been dealt with promptly and efficiently. Mileage by then was over 4,000 Sometime in 1934 father and friend took the car on a long tour into Southern Germany and there are several photos taken on that trip including loading (or unloading) onto channel ferry, just guessing Newhaven/Dieppe The next report is it taking part in the Great West Motor Club’s London to Bournemouth trials at the end of March 1935 and I have a photo of it taken at the Bovington Camp section. As father married later in April that year it seems unlikely that he was the entrant so he must have traded it in by then for the 2 Litre Lagonda he next had. The only clue as to its location after 1935 is a repair plate on the radiator header tank by Sercks of Maidstone, Kent and a tax disc issued by London C C expiring end of June 1938. The next phase in the story is that in 1937 or 1938 the car was bought by a young Lincolnshire man, Colin Muncaster. I was able to contact the widow of Colin’s brother, Ray, and she (Phyllis) was able to tell me quite a lot and the rest of the history comes from her and another name she mentioned, Mike Hewson, who lived very near the Muncasters in Horncastle. Mike Hewson’s father was with Colin when he bought the car and they took it to the British Grand Prix held at Donington Park in 1937 or 38. Colin was keen on some competition driving and had the car worked on by the well known MG fettler Harry Lester. The engine had a Laystall crank fitted, cylinder head modified with polished ports enlarged to 1 1/8 inch dia and bigger 1 1/8 inch carburetters fitted. The brakes were converted to hydraulic using components from a Wolseley Hornet with 9 inch drums. Ignition was by 'Scintilla' magneto. Phyllis told me that Colin and Ray were coming home from the pub when they ran off the road near Horncastle and Ray, being thrown forward, lost his front teeth on the dashboard. She asked if the marks were still there on the aluminium panel. I looked and indeed they were and still are! I imagine this was the cause of the bent chassis discovered during restoration. Apparently during the war Colin bought another MG (understood to be a J1 salonette) to use that engine to 'save' the original 'good' engine until war was over, but the car was taxed for a while in 1941 and 1943. Colin was born in 1914 but for some reason wasn’t called up for military service. He had a Garage business and after the war worked for the Council. I have photocopies of ALX 934 taken from late 1930’s on some showing his Hill Climb runs and trophies won, all presumably in the Lincolnshire general area up to about 1952 when by then it was fitted with 16 inch rear wheels. The 19 inch wheels went back on for everyday use until 1955 when it was pushed into an open ended Nissen hut until bought by Harry Dickinson of Bucknall, Lincs, in 1978 where it sat unused for another 27 years until I bought it from Harry’s widow. Before that a chance conversation with another J2 owner at a car show in 2005 led to the discovery that father’s old car still existed and was for sale. I went up to Lincolnshire to see it; very much as I would have expected after so long unused although the engine had been started and run occasionally. It seemed complete and original and there was a large amount of spare parts included. My offer was accepted and we hauled it back to Suffolk a week or so later in July. It soon became apparent that it needed much more than a tidy up and it looked like a total strip down was needed, everything that could wear was worn and the woodworm had consumed most of the plywood trim. The first thing to do was to drain and refill the engine oil, water in radiator, connect to a battery and take a fuel feed from a petrol can. Starter pushed, and engine started and ran strongly, still on its magneto, so this was encouraging. So began over 2 years of work whenever I was able. The most useful tool was the angle grinder to cut off all the rusted up nuts and bolts and with body off I could see what had to be done. The body and chassis went up to David Wall in Wroxham where he repaired and replaced any damaged and rotten timber and re panelled in steel or aluminium where necessary. The chassis was straightened and new stubs welded on the rear chassis cross members to take the spring trunnions. Other steel fittings, plates, brackets, stainless battery box etc. were made up for me by the people at the metal fabricators whom I then worked for. A trip to Sports and Vintage in Shrewsbury supplied me with all the other bits and pieces I thought I needed as well as relining the clutch plate. This was followed by a trip to Jones Springs to recondition the springs. This lot must be collected by 12.30pm on Friday 25th October. If the buyer has not collected by this time it will automatically be removed and placed into storage, incurring a removal charge of £100 + VAT, to include the first week of storage, unless otherwise noted. Storage will then be charged at £10 + VAT per day or part thereof. If collecting from storage, please provide 24 hours notice

CAR & MOTORCYCLE AUCTION CONDITIONS

1) All lots will be offered for sale subject to these conditions of sale for veteran, vintage and classic vehicles
2) Charterhouse act as agents for the vendor of each lot and shall not be party to or liable in any manner whatsoever on any contract of sale between the seller and the buyer.
3) The Buyer.
a) The highest bidder acknowledged as such by the auctioneer will be the buyer. If any dispute arises, the auctioneer shall have absolute discretion to settle the matter. The auctioneer shall rule the bidding and no bid shall be retracted. The auctioneer reserves the right to refuse any bid. The bidder at the sale who is successful in purchasing any lot or lots is entirely responsible for paying for such lot or lots in accordance with our terms of business. Purchases made on behalf of a third party are entirely the responsibility of the bidder at the sale. The auctioneer reserves the right to bid on behalf of the vendors for any lot and to withdraw, consolidate or divide any lot or lots.
b) The buyer of any lot shall be solely responsible for conforming with the requirements of the Road Traffic Acts, the Construction and Use of Motor Vehicle Regulations and all relevant orders, rules and legislation made in connection therewith.
c) The buyer of any lot shall be solely responsible for the obtaining of any export license that may be required in connection with any lot purchased. (see below)
Export Licenses
i) Buyers are reminded that an export license is required for any vehicle purchased for more than £15,999 and manufactured or produced 50 years prior to the date of export. Certain other items including, inter alia, all manuscripts and documents 50 or more years old and photographic material 60 or more years old and valued at £400 or more require export licenses.
ii) It should be noted that export licenses usually take a minimum of four weeks to obtain and buyers are reminded that their purchases must be stored away from the auction site, at their cost, pending export.
iii) Buyers are reminded that it is a serious offence to breach or attempt the regulations concerning export licenses.
4) Buyers are reminded that their purchases are held at their risk from the fall of the hammer and Charterhouse will not accept any liability for loss of or damage to any lot.
5) Registration. To assist the progress of the sale, all prospective buyers must register their name and address at reception and collect a numbered bidding card before the sale commences. This card may be used to indicate your bids to the auctioneer during the sale. Two forms of identification need to be supplied to register, at least one with name, address, signature and preferably photograph, for example a new style driving licence. For prospective buyers who will not be at the sale, either because they are leaving absentee bids or are having a telephone bid, and who are interested in a vehicle, a £500.00 deposit will need to be paid. This will be refunded if the bid is not successful. If the bid is successful, this sum will be used towards the final bill.
6) Buyer's premium. 12.5% plus VAT, payable on the hammer price.
7) Value Added Tax. Lots on which Value Added Tax may be payable by the buyer on the "hammer price" are indicated in the catalogue by a symbol beside the lot number. The buyer shall pay any VAT which may be due on any amounts owed by the buyer under these conditions of sale at the rates prevailing on the day of the auction.
8) Auctioneers Margin Scheme. The Auctioneers Margin Scheme allows auctioneers to sell items without VAT on the hammer price. Under the margin scheme an amount equivalent to VAT at the current rate is added to the buyer's premium. This amount cannot be refunded. The VAT element will not be shown separately on the buyer's invoice.
9) Payment. The purchase price must be paid by the buyer to Charterhouse no later than 12 noon on the day following the sale. Our methods of payment are with cash or card, or bank transfer on a banking day (not Saturday or Sunday). Cash for amounts over £8,000 will not be accepted. Cheques will not be accepted. All purchasers must be paid in full before any lot is removed from the premises, no goods will be released to buyers unknown to the auctioneers without full payment in to Charterhouse’s bank account. Any buyers unknown to the auctioneer must establish a bank reference with the Accounts department prior to the sale. Anyone who, for whatever reason, is unable to pay for their goods on the day of the sale, must inform the Accounts department as to the date and method that payment will be made. Accounts not paid within fourteen days will automatically be subject to an interest charge of 5% above base rate from the day of sale.
a) Please contact the office for our bank details.
10) Description.
a) All lots are sold and purchased ‘as seen’. A vehicle sold ‘as seen’ is sold and purchased for what it is and with all its faults (if any) and without any condition, warranty or other term (whether expressed or implied and whether implied by statute, common law, custom or otherwise) as to the age, description, mileage, suitability, fitness for purpose, merchantable quality or roadworthiness of the vehicle.
b) Every effort has been made to ensure the accuracy of the description of each lot, but these, whether made orally or in the catalogue, are expressions of opinion and not representations of fact. Illustrations whether in the catalogue, on the web site, or sent by email are solely for guidance and must not be relied upon in any manner whatsoever. Most lots are of an age and nature which precludes their being in pristine condition. The condition of any lot and the nature of any damage and/or restoration should be confirmed by the buyer by examination prior to the sale. All prospective purchasers must satisfy themselves as to the condition, colour, age and all other matters relating to any lot and no claims will be accepted in respect of any such matter.
c) Each buyer by making a bid for a lot acknowledges that he has satisfied themselves fully as to the condition of the lot. If any damage is done to any lot at the viewing or before, during or after the sale, such damage shall be made good by the person committing such damage, principals being responsible for the acts of their servants, such damage to be assessed by the auctioneers.
d) Whilst every endeavour has been made to ensure that the items lotted in this catalogue will be available and offered for sale in catalogue order, no responsibility can be accepted by the auctioneers for variations and omissions due to circumstances beyond their control. Neither Charterhouse nor the sellers of any lot will accept responsibility for any misrepresentations, mis-descriptions or omissions obtained in this catalogue.
11) Contract of Sale.
a) On the fall of the hammer, a contract of sale is completed between the seller and the buyer. Charterhouse is not a party to the contract of sale and shall not be liable for any breach thereof by the buyer or the seller.
b) If successful in buying a lot, please ensure that your number can be seen by the auctioneer and that it is your number that is called out. Should there be any doubts as to price or buyer, please draw the auctioneer's attention to it immediately. Please contact the accounts desk with details of how you will pay.
c) The ownership of the lot(s) purchased will not pass to the buyer until the buyer has paid the auctioneer in full the total amount due and the auctioneer has applied such payment to the lot.
12) Transfer of Risk. Each lot shall be the purchaser's sole risk from the fall of the hammer and shall be sold with all faults and imperfections, the auctioneer not being responsible for the correct description, genuineness or authenticity of any lot and making no warranty whatsoever. The purchaser is deemed to have inspected the lots and satisfied himself as to their condition.
13) Commission Bids. If instructed, the auctioneers will execute bids and advise prospective purchasers. This service is free. Lots will always be purchased as cheaply as is allowed by such other bids and reserves as are on the auctioneer's books. In the event of identical bids, the earliest will take precedence. There must always be a maximum limit indicated, ie the amount to which you would bid if you were attending the auction yourself. "Buy" or unlimited bids will not be accepted. Commission bids placed by telephone are accepted at the client's risk. We do accept commission bids by facsimile. We urge our clients to place such commission bids within one hour of the close of the view day.
14) Telephone Bids. Requests for telephone bidding must be registered with the Accounts department within one hour of the close of the view day. It may not be possible to accept requests on sale days. Written confirmation of such bids from persons unknown to the auctioneers must be received before the commencement of the sale. Whilst every effort will be made to execute telephone bidding, the auctioneers cannot be held responsible for any default or neglect in connection with this service. All such arrangements therefore are made entirely at the prospective buyer's risk.
15)

Collection of Goods. All lots must be collected by 12.30pm on the day following the sale. Goods not collected by this time will automatically be removed and placed into storage, incurring a removal charge of £100.00 + VAT per vehicle for cars, £60 + VAT per vehicle for motorcycles and £100 + VAT for combinations, to include the first week of storage for all vehicles. Storage will then be charged at £10 + VAT per day or part thereof per vehicle. Collection and storage charges may also apply to automobilia, please check before bidding. If collecting from storage, please provide 24 hours notice.
Smaller items can be removed to our offices by arrangement.
Lots will only be released to the buyer or their authorised representative upon presentation of release notes issued by Charterhouse and settlement of any removal, handling and storage charges due. Purchasers are reminded that each lot shall be the purchasers sole risk from the fall of the hammer.

16) Third Party Liability. Every person on the auctioneers' premises before, during or after a sale, shall be deemed to be there at their own risk and shall have no claim against the auctioneer or owner of the auction premises in respect of any injury they may sustain or any accident which may occur.
