JOHN PHILLIPS (fl. c.1820-1831) ’Anticipation - Bringing them to the Scratch-Hercules in the Church; or the tithes in danger’ hand coloured etching, published by S.W. Fores, Piccadilly, 1829 Pl. 9 x 13 1/2in (48.1 x 33.6cm) two other satirical cartoons titled ’English Discipline for Meddleings’; Throwing a Light on the Dark deeds of the Pensioners’; and three Baxter Prints of mountaineering interest, one titled ‘ The Ascent of Mont Blanc’; all unframed; six (6) In Phillip’s satirical print Wellington in civilian dress stands between two bloated and mitred Bishops. Taking each by the ear, he forces them to disgorge sovereigns into a big tub, ’receptacle for the poor Curates, repairs of Churches and support of Paupers’.
