Mikhail Roginsky (Russian, 1931-2004) Blazer rose/ Pink blazer signé en latin, titré et daté « 92 » (au verso) tempera sur carton 112 x 67cm (44 1/8 x 26 3/8in). signed in Latin, titled and dated '92' (verso) tempera on cardboard Footnotes: Provenance Acquired directly from the artist Private collection, Netherlands Mikhail Roginsky began his artistic career as a theater set designer. The unique atmosphere of theater helped him realize that essence in creative works was more important than originality. For Roginsky, theater was fundamentally about play and imagination, which meant naturalism was unacceptable in his work—instead, set designs needed to become integral parts of the mysterious action unfolding on stage. The themes that would define Roginsky's lifelong artistic focus emerged in the 1960s. Simple objects from Soviet everyday life—stoves, pots, kettles, primus cookers—along with urban landscapes became the recurring motifs in his work. His still lifes, with their highly subjective depiction of household items, stand apart from the metaphysical still lifes of artists like Krasnopevtsev, Morandi, or Veisberg. Roginsky approached objects differently, stating: 'I forced myself to recreate reality based on my own perceptions of it.' By placing these objects within a specific social context, the items function as what might be called, in theatrical terms, a distinctive 'backdrop' on the stage of the Soviet era. In Roginsky's hands, ordinary household objects transform into poignant symbols of their time. After emigrating to Paris in 1978, Roginsky continued working in series. He created paintings featuring bottles, bookshelves, interiors of Moscow communal apartments, and still lifes with assemblage elements.
