DISCOVERY OF THE NILE, PRESENTATION COPY. The two important accounts of the discovery of the source of the Nile: GRANT, JAMES AUGUSTUS. 1827-1892. A Walk Across Africa or Domestic Scenes from My Nile Journal. Edinburgh: William Blackwood, 1864. 8vo. Large folding engraved map, hand-colored in outline, in pocket at end. Publisher's dark olive cloth, decorated in blind and gilt on upper cover, gilt lettering on spine. Corners rubbed and bumped, spine soiled, slight browning and spotting, ink notations. Provenance: Property from a New England Collector. FIRST EDITION, PRESENTATION COPY TO THE AUTHOR'S DAUGHTER, inscribed on the front free endpaper 'To my dear little good 'Mary Augusta' with her father's fondest love — 1st of May 1873./ J.A. Grant' Czech Africa, p 111. 'Speke hoped to prove his contention that Lake Victoria, which he had discovered in 1858, was the source of the Nile. The two explorers and their porters now embarked on the 'long walk' on which Palmerston was later to remark and so provide Grant with the title of his book, A Walk across Africa (1864). It took them inland from the east African coast to Tabora and then northwards around the western shores of Lake Victoria to the kingdom of Buganda and ultimately down the Nile valley to Egypt' (ODNB). 'A monumental work of exploration, this represents Grant's experiences travelling with John Hanning Speke from Zanzibar to the source of the Nile at Lake Victoria, naming Ripon Falls, then trekking down river to the Mediterranean Sea' (Czech p 66).
