ROBERT MCALMON PORTRAIT BY BERENICE ABBOTT. ABBOTT, BERENICE. 1898-1991. Robert McAlmon. Photograph, 240 x 194 mm, gelatin silver print, on 352 x 280 mm mount, signed in pencil by Abbott on mount below image, and titled in pencil on lower left corner of mount, with Berenice Abbott's stamp on verso. Some fingermarks to margins of mount, small nail holes and top and bottom centers of mount. Matted and framed. McAlmon, who was as much a chronicler of the Lost Generation as he was part of it, sat for this portrait sometime between 1925 and 1930. The stamp on the verso of the mount, with Abbott's 50 Commerce Street address, dates the print no later than 1932. Abbott had been working as an assistant to Man Ray in Paris when, in 1925, McAlmon helped her establish her own photo studio in Paris, with financial support from Peggy Guggenheim. After a visit to New York in 1929, Abbott decided that the photogenic appeal of the American city offered her a unique subject matter. She closed her Paris studio and set up shop in New York, documenting the city and its residents through the remainder of her prolific career.
