EULER'S SEMINAL INTRODUCTION TO MATHEMATICAL ANALYSIS. EULER, LEONHARD. 1707-1783. Introductio in analysin infinitorum. Lausanne: M.-M. Bousquet, 1748. 2 volumes. 4to (235 x 188 mm). Engraved frontispiece in volume I, engraved portrait of dedicatee Jean Jacques Dortous de Mairan in volume II, engraved vignette on each title, folding letterpress table, 40 engraved folding plates. Contemporary half calf and marbled boards, 5 raised bands on spines, red and black morocco lettering pieces, marbled endpapers, edges dyed red. Rubbed, corners bumped, some dampstaining, old ink marginalia, light scattered browning and spotting, mostly in first volume. FIRST EDITION of the introductory work in Euler's 'trilogy' on mathematical analysis, to which would be added Institutiones Calculi Differentialis in 1755, but no third part of the trilogy ever materialized. Nonetheless, it laid the groundwork for the study of mathematics for generations to come. 'In his 'Introduction to Mathematical Analysis' Euler did for modern analysis what Euclid had done for ancient geometry. It contains an exposition of algebra, trigonometry and analytical geometry, both plane and solid, a definition of logarithms as exponents, and important contributions to the theory of equations' (PMM). Euler was a talented Swiss mathematician, astronomer, physicist and engineer, who studied at the University of Basel, but spent most of his life in St. Petersburg, teaching at the Imperial Russian Academy of Sciences, and later taking a post at the Berlin Academy. He eventually fell out of favor with the Prussian court and returned to St. Petersburg. He made important discoveries in mathematics, contributing to the development of infinitesimal calculus, along with the Bernoullis, with whom he was closely acquainted. He also made considerable contributions to analytic number theory, graph theory, empirical logic and even music theory. Much of today's mathematical notation was introduced in Euler's work. Norman 732; PMM 196. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com For further information about this lot please visit the lot listing
