A study collection of English delftware shards, mostly 17th century The miscellany including a London delftware shard, probably from a small salt, painted in blue with a head of a Turkish gentleman with turban and long curled moustache, possibly Morat (Murad) the Great; together with a shard showing a sailing ship, probably from Pickleherring Pottery, an unglazed kiln waster of a candlestick, handles from bleeding bowls or porringers, four kiln supports or trivets from a delftware kiln site, and a selection of other London delftware shards and wasters (Qty) Footnotes: Provenance Graham Slater Collection The image of the Turk's head may be linked to one of the 17th century London coffee houses of the same name. Graham Slater discusses this very rare shard in his paper 'Twice through Fire, once Water', ECC Trans, Vol.17, Pt.3 (2001), pp.329-330. He also illustrates a trade token from Morat's Coffee House in Exchange Alley, see fig.9. A polychrome flask modelled as the head and shoulders of a Turkish man was sold by Christie's on 24 January 2020, lot 284. This flask is also illustrated by Hazel Forsyth in relation to her discussion of the 'Turk's Head' coffeehouses, see Amanda Dunsmore, ed., This Blessed Pot, This Earth, English Pottery Studies in Honour of Jonathan Horne (2011), pp.182-4, fig. 2. Many of the shards in this lot were recovered from the Thames and in some cases Graham Slater marked the pieces with the find site, for example 'Isle of Dogs', in an attempt to make sense of the complex history of English delftware.
