Description
Edmond Zakaryan (Armenian, 1936-2006) Street in Gyumri inscribed and titled in Armenian, dated '1967' (verso) oil on canvas (unframed) 56 x 95cm (22 1/16 x 37 3/8in). Footnotes: Provenance The artist's family. Exhibited Yerevan, Artists Union of Armenia, Edmond Zakaryan, 1971. Literature S. Khacahtryan, 'The First Spring [Exhibition]. Names and Expectations' in Sovetakan Arvest [Soviet Art], no. 5, May 1968, pp. 18-21, illustrated Exhibition catalogue, Edmond Zakaryan, Artists Union of Armenia, Yerevan, 1971, illustrated [p. 3]. Edmond Zakaryan belonged to a young generation of artists who marked the rapid development of Armenian painting during the 1960s. Just as his contemporaries Minas Avetisian and Vruir Galstian, Zakaryan's input in the history of the Armenian 'golden age' was made through the artist's reinterpretation and consequent revival of the vibrant traditions of Armenian art. Early in his career, Zakaryan developed a distinctive language characterised by simplicity of form and austere palette which became a manifesto of the artist's open expression and freedom of painting. Gyumri (Soviet Leninakan) was a native city to Zakaryan who was born and spent his childhood there. The artist depicts a street scene in his hometown with a particular sensitivity. The central house with an invitingly yellow door and window frame dominates the frontal composition. The subtle earthy palette and think brushwork set the tone for the seemingly empty streets and buildings under clouded sky, evoking the notion of a once abandoned home and deep sense of nostalgia. We are grateful to the family of the artist for their assistance in cataloguing the present lot. Buyers' Premium and Charges

28% on the first £40,000 of the hammer price;
27% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £40,000 up to and including £800,000;
21% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £800,000 up to and including £4,500,000;
and 14.5% of the hammer price of any amounts in excess of £4,500,000.
