Footnotes: Provenance Anrad Gallery, London Sanjay Manubhai Chitara (b.1978), an artist from Ahmedabad, is dedicated to preserving the centuries-old tradition of creating Mata ni Pachedi, or the Cloth of the Mother Goddess, a craft that has been passed down through generations for over 300 years. His significant contributions to this art form were recognised with the Indian National Award in 2000. The cloth often depicts a goddess surrounded by vibrant flora and fauna, and it was traditionally displayed behind the sacred idol of the goddess. The technique, rooted in the Kalamkari style, involves using a stick made from the date plant to draw on cotton cloth with natural dyes. Each colour holds deep religious symbolism. The process requires meticulous treatment of the cloth and the application of various colours in several stages.
