Jamini Roy (Indian, 1887-1972) Untitled (Tribal Women) printed lower right and edition 196/500 lower left serigraph on paper 35.3 x 52cm (13 7/8 x 20 1/2in). Footnotes: Provenance Archer Graphic Studio, Ahmedabad In 'Tribal Women,' Roy delves deep into the heart of rural India, capturing the soulful existence and timeless beauty of indigenous women. This series embodies Roy's profound respect for the cultural heritage of tribal communities. Roy's fascination with folk art forms, particularly the Bengal Patua style, shines through in these works. The artist's commitment to authenticity and simplicity led him to adopt a pared-down aesthetic, discarding unnecessary embellishments in favour of a raw and unadorned portrayal of his subjects. With deliberate use of bold lines and a vibrant colour palette, Roy brings the spirit of tribal women to life. The three women depicted here exude an air of quiet dignity and strength. Roy's minimalist approach underscores the inner fortitude and resilience of these women, paying homage to their unwavering connection with nature and tradition. The eyes, a focal point in many of his compositions conveys a wealth of feelings, from contemplation to joy, from introspection to celebration. The deliberate use of traditional motifs and patterns in their attire further establishes a visual dialogue between the contemporary and the timeless. Through these works, Roy not only immortalizes the spirit of tribal women but also offers viewers a glimpse into a world where simplicity and depth coexist harmoniously.
