Description
Arup Das (1924-2004) Untitled (Village Women) signed 'Arup Das' upper right oil on canvas, framed 34 x 48.5cm (13 3/8 x 19 1/8in). Footnotes: Provenance Property from a private collection, UK. Das was known for his powerful depictions of rural life, historical themes, and the everyday struggles and resilience of the common people. Born in Bengal, Das was a key figure in modern Indian art, combining elements of both traditional Indian aesthetics and contemporary artistic styles. He studied at the Government College of Art and Craft in Kolkata and later went on to refine his skills in Europe, particularly in Paris, where he was exposed to modernist influences. Despite these international experiences, Das remained deeply connected to his Indian roots, particularly in his representations of village life and historical narratives. Throughout his career, Das developed a distinctive visual language, often characterized by his use of bold colours, expressive lines, and a focus on human figures, especially women and laborers. His works reflected a deep empathy for the marginalized, often portraying rural women as seen in Untitled (Village Women) farmers, and historical events in a way that combined social realism with an abstract, modernist touch. Buyers' Premium and Charges
For all Sales categories, buyer's premium excluding Cars, Motorbikes, Wine, Whisky and Coin & Medal sales, will be as follows:
Buyer's Premium Rates
28% on the first £40,000 of the hammer price;
27% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £40,000 up to and including £800,000;
21% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £800,000 up to and including £4,500,000;
and 14.5% of the hammer price of any amounts in excess of £4,500,000.
A 3rd party bidding platform fee of 4% of the Hammer Price for Buyers using the following bidding platforms will be added to the invoices of successful Buyers for auctions starting on or after 6th July 2024 – Invaluable; Live Auctioneers; The Saleroom; Lot-tissimo.
VAT at the current rate of 20% will be added to the Buyer's Premium and charges excluding Artists Resale Right.
