Kartick Chandra Pyne (1931-2017) Bird is life signed in Bengali lower left; further inscribed with the title, artist, date and provenance verso oil on canvas, framed 101 x 116cm (39 3/4 x 45 11/16in). Footnotes: Provenance Property from a private collection, Geneva. Acquired from Hôtel des Ventes Genève, October 2005. Born in Kolkata, Kartick Chandra Pyne studied painting at the Government College of Art and Craft in Calcutta between 1950 and 1955. A pioneering figure in modernist art, Pyne skilfully blended folk art with Western artistic movements, particularly Surrealism. His works are populated by imaginative creatures drawn from the rich tradition of Indian mythology, maintaining a sense of fantasy throughout his entire body of work. In Bird is Life, Pyne presents a bold red background, with a stylised tree garnished with small green leaves at the centre of the canvas. Two pink birds rest atop the tree, while a black cat peers through the foliage on the left. On the right, three abstract, multi-coloured faces in a surrealist style are depicted through geometric patterns. This work exemplifies his surrealist approach, showcasing his vibrant imagination and the distinctive whimsical essence of his art.
