SAIDA SHIGEMASU (ACTIVE CIRCA LATE 18TH CENTURY) Chinese Children Practicing the Four Accomplishments Edo period, 18th century A pair of six-panel folding screens in ink, color, gold, and gold foil on paper depicting two Chinese buildings on the shore of bodies of water, on the right screen a pavilion next to a rushing river, the structure occupied by women and children largely occupied in music-making, a boat floating in the nearby lake, its occupants playing a boardgame, on the left screen the women and children on the shore next to another river, most of them either practicing or reading calligraphy, or looking at a painting, both screens signed Shōrokuinoge Nakatsukasa shō-sakan Ki Shigemasu (Lower rank six at the Ministry of the Center, Ki Shigemasu) and sealed Saida 60 1/4 x 140 1/4in (153 x 356.2cm) each (2). Footnotes: Records of Shigemasu are sparse. He is best known for being the father of Shigenari (1786-1858), who executed panel paintings at the Imperial Palace in Kyoto. Given Shigemasu's rank within the Imperial Court, he too must have been recognized for his painting skill. The Four Scholarly Accomplishments: playing the qin, playing weiqi (go), calligraphy, and connoisseurship of paintings (in Japanese, Kinkishoga), are a frequent theme in Japanese painting. The present lot shows Chinese children, rather than the standard elderly scholars, practicing all of them.
