A LIMOGES POLYCHROME ENAMEL AND PARCEL-GILT TRIPTYCH DEPICTING THE DEPLORATION OF CHRIST Attributed to Pierre Reymond, circa 1560-80 Joseph of Arimathea supports the body of Christ lying in a shroud, Nicodemus behind him; on the left, the Virgin, Saint John and a holy woman raise their arms in a gesture of desolation; Mary Magdalene kneels at the feet of Christ; on the left wing, the prophet Jeremiah holds a scroll, on the right wing Sibylla Delphica holds a scroll both presented in a platform, niche, and canopy; in a later gilt frame and red velvet covered surround; the black-coloured counter-glaze with three paper labels IMPORTED FROM FRANCE, DOUANES FRANCAISES * PARIS BATIGNOLLES / ADMISSIONS TEMPORAIRES with Lot *?289/ ART 1 in black ink / a paper label written in black ink 60?28. height of central panel 5in (12.7cm); width 4in (10.2cm); height of side panels 5in (12.7cm); width 2in (5.1cm); height overall 7in (28cm); width opened 14 1/2in (37cm) Footnotes: Provenance Collection of Alice de Rothschild (1847-1922); William Randolph Hearst Collection, back to the early 1940s; Gimbel Brothers, New York, New York; Hammer Galleries, New York, March 1941, Lot 1289; Mrs. Paul Bauder, Tucson, Arizona; Gifted to Dr. Faguet; Property from the collection of Robert Faguet, acquired from the above. The composition is based after the Small Passion series of prints by Albrecht Dürer, circa 1509-1511. We can compare our triptych to another one attributed to Pierre Reymond and his workshop and dated 1568 conserved in Petit Palais, musée des Beaux-arts de la Ville de Paris daté de 1568 (ODUT1260). Both have the same dark counter-glaze reverse. There is also very good example of a triptych by Pierre Reymond, dated 1538 depicting The Lamentation with the Prophet Daniel and St Peter conserved in the Fitzwilliam museum, Cambridge. The department would like to thank Isabelle d'Amécourt for her assistance cataloguing this lot. Condition reports are not provided in catalog descriptions. Buyers' Premium and Charges
