A Thomas Ince Original Oil Portrait Oil on canvas, unsigned, framed. Together with 3 silver gelatin portrait photographs of Ince, two blind stamped with photographers 'Harris & Ewing / Washington, D.C.' and 'Ince Studios' and one stamped to front, 'Evans / L.A.,' all approximately 8 x 10 in.; a pair of 1924 letters and a magazine article pertaining to the Ince Studio; a Xerographic manuscript, 96 pp, titled 'The House That Ince Built' by Dennis Lee Daggett; a 31 pp small booklet titled, 'Keith's Prospect Theatre,' Cleveland, Ohio, dated the week of March 14, 1910, featuring Ince on the cover; 4 pp of notes (including a Xerographic 2 pp letter from Ince's widow pertaining to the rumors about his death and what really happened); notes by historian Walter O'Connor pertaining to collecting Ince material and to Ince's surviving relatives and contacts; a group of newspaper and Xerographic clippings pertaining to the Ince Studio and its history of owners including Paramount, RKO, and Desilu, and others, along with the David O. Selznick Studios. Though Thomas Ince was a prolific filmmaker, his career is often overshadowed by his mysterious death. Ince was the forerunner of filmmakers like Mary Pickford, Douglas Fairbanks, Charlie Chaplin, and others, when he created his own silent film studio. The present-day Sony Pictures is the ancestor of one of Ince's companies, The Triangle Motion Picture Company. Incredibly, after a career in the theatre, Ince was behind the production of over 800 films, beginning in 1910. With the help of director D.W. Griffith, Ince launched his directorial career and eventually went on to producer status. His own studio, 'Inceville,' was the first of its kind, specializing in Westerns. He died at age 44 amidst speculation that he was killed on William Randolph Hearst's yacht by Hearst himself, who allegedly mistook him for Charlie Chaplin, who was rumored to be having an affair with Hearst's mistress, Marion Davies. The rumors persist to this day, despite doctors and Ince's family insisting he died of heart failure. Overall: 26.5 x 21 in.; within frame: 15.5 x 21.5 in.
