A Gone with the Wind Fireplace from Melanie Wilkes' Parlor A Classical style painted plaster and pine faux fireplace, affixed to a later plinth. Selznick International Pictures, 1939. In a film where tense scenes abound, the sequence in Gone with the Wind in which Melanie, Scarlett, India, and Mrs. Meade (played by Olivia de Havilland, Vivien Leigh, Alicia Rhett, and Leona Roberts, respectively) create a sewing circle while their menfolk raid Shantytown, an action taken after Scarlett was attacked earlier in the day, is one of the most anxiety inducing. Unbeknownst to Scarlett, the women are prepared to lie to the approaching officials in order to save their husbands' lives. The scene takes place in Melanie's parlor, where this fireplace can be seen directly behind Melanie as she sews and reads from David Copperfield. Though Ashley Wilkes comes from a rich Southern family, the war has reduced his lodgings to that of a simple dwelling with a fireplace surround much less elaborate than the one at Twelve Oaks. The fireplace can later be seen in Melanie's death sequence, this time with a green checked fabric apron around the mantel. The fireplace can also be seen in the film, The Woman in the Window (1944) starring Edward G. Robinson and Joan Bennett; in Out of the Past (1947) starring Jane Greer and Robert Mitchum; in the television series, Perry Mason, in a 1957 episode titled, 'Case of the Crooked Candle'; and in the 1960 Bing Crosby and Fabian film, High Time. Accompanied by 4 reproduction set stills from Gone with the Wind of the set in which the fireplace appears, 8.5 x 11 in.; an original keybook scene still from GWTW showing the fireplace; and several reproduction photographs featuring the fireplace in scenes from the film. Height: 52.5 in.; width: 81 in.; depth: 13 in. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: W W If the lot is not picked up immediately following the auction it may be removed to an offsite storage location for collection.
