A Clark Gable Original Costume Sketch by Walter Plunkett for Gone with the Wind Selznick International Pictures, 1939. Watercolor and pencil on board, signed ('Plunkett') in gray watercolor to lower right, with typescript legend affixed to bottom of board with excerpt from the book relating to the specific costume, and a 'Selznick International Pictures' approval stamp to verso indicating in red pencil that the design is for 'Rhett,' for Picture No. '28-9,' and for Change No. '#9,' with other spaces left blank. Illustration board has an 8-inch cut and a 1-inch cut in the lower left portion, just below the shoes and above the book excerpt, which do not cut into the illustration itself. Unlike other prisoners in the Yankee jail, Rhett Butler, played by Clark Gable, serves his term playing cards with his keepers and looking dapper doing it. This ensemble of Rhett's can be seen when Scarlett O'Hara (played by Vivien Leigh) comes to the jail to deceive him into lending her money for the taxes on Tara. Designer Walter Plunkett pursued producer David O. Selznick for the job of costume designer for Gone with the Wind, so desirous was he of the position. He read Margaret Mitchell's novel over and over, each time finding new information to aid him in creating accurate clothing for the period as well as for the individual characters. He even spent time researching in Atlanta, with the help of author Mitchell. For the character of Rhett Butler alone, Plunkett produced over 40 costume sketches, and 12% of the film's final cost was attributed to the wardrobe. This sketch features Rhett looking rather swarthy, which is how he is described in Mitchell's novel. 18 x 23 in.
