Description
A Gig Young Costume Sketch for The Three Musketeers by Walter Plunkett MGM, 1948. Designed by Walter Plunkett. Gouache, watercolor, and pencil on illustration board, signed ('Plunkett') in watercolor to lower right and initials 'RB' below his signature, and 'Aramis / #2' erroneously handwritten in pencil to upper right (the character was Porthos, which is corrected on the verso), with rubber stamp imprint for approval on the verso filled out in pencil with '1420' as the production number, '4849' as the sketch number, 'Porthos' as the subject of the sketch, 'Sam' as the fitter, dated '12-23,' and sequence 'Ch 2.' Various penciled annotations to verso as well. Gig Young had been a working film actor for 8 years before he landed the role of Porthos in The Three Musketeers, co-starring him with an accomplished cast including Gene Kelly, Angela Lansbury, Van Heflin, and Frank Morgan. The colorful adventure film allowed Young to display his good looks in colorful costumes designed by Walter Plunkett (best known for his creations for Gone with the Wind [1939]). Young's way with a comedic line and his athletic prowess in the form of fencing were also shown to advantage in the film, helping to launch his career as a leading man. 22 x 25 in. Buyers' Premium and Charges

28% on the first $50,000 of the hammer price;
27% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of $50,000 up to and including $1,000,000;
21% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of $1,000,000 up to and including $6,000,000;
and 14.5% of the hammer price of any amounts in excess of $6,000,000.
