A Gone with the Wind Set of Chairs from Melanie Wilkes' Death Sequence A set of seven Classical style stained mahogany chairs, comprising one armchair and six side chairs. Selznick International Pictures, 1939. After the war, Ashley Wilkes and his wife, Melanie Wilkes (played by Leslie Howard and Olivia de Havilland) struggle to make ends meet. After Ashley begins participating in the lumbar business with Scarlett, their holdings stabilize, and they are able to buy a house and furnish it. As the film progresses, we see these changes occur, and in the sequence in which Melanie is on her death bed and receiving her last visitors at her home, we see these chairs throughout the parlor and foyer, and they represent an upgrade from some of the previous scenes of Melanie's home. The pivotal scene features Scarlett and Rhett (played by Vivien Leigh and Clark Gable) and Ashley waiting in the parlor. Scarlett also sits on the armchair while waiting to speak with the dying Melanie. The chairs have been reupholstered but retain their original finish and are in much the same condition as they appeared in the film. The chairs were also used in the film, The Uninvited (1944) which starred Ray Milland and Ruth Hussey (a set still from this film showing 4 of the chairs is included in this lot). Accompanied by a 1971 reissue scene still of Vivien Leigh sitting in the arm chair (also in the photo are Leslie Howard, Clark Gable, and Mickey Kuhn) during Melanie's death sequence, 8 x 10 in. Height of armchair: 35 in.; width: 23 in.; depth: 18 in. Lot to be sold without reserve.
