William Holden's career at Paramount elevated him from a handsome young actor in lightweight films to an Academy Award-winning leading man. Though he showed comedic talent in films such as Dear Ruth (1947), by 1950 he was under the direction of Billy Wilder in Sunset Boulevard in the role of a lifetime. He truly hit his stride in the 1950s. Wilder again directed him in Stalag 17 (1953), for which he won the Best Actor Oscar. Later in his career, Holden would say that only one out of five films that he made were a pleasant experience, and in only one out of ten films did he feel any real sense of accomplishment.
