A lithograph portrait of Cem Sultan (1459-95), youngest son of Sultan Mehmet II, the Conqueror Bernard-Romain Julien (1802-71), after Court, published by E. Gambart, Paris, circa 1840 hand-coloured lithograph 58 x 44 cm. Footnotes: Cem (or Djem) Sultan was blocked from succeeding to the throne by his brother Bajazet, and spent most of his life in exile. He was an accomplished poet in Turkish and Persian. For two almost identical portrayals of Cem Sultan, the first in charcoal, see the sale in these rooms, Bonhams, Islamic and Indian Art, 8th October 2009, lot 80; and in watercolour, 5th April 2011, lot 51.
