A cuenca pottery tile with Nasrid blazon Spain, 16th Century
A cuenca pottery tile with Nasrid blazon Spain, 16th Century of rectangular form, decorated in blue, white and ochre with central lobed cartouche containing a shield with white heraldic band with inscription, a partial 8-pointed star to either side containing trefoil motifs, all surrounded by sections containing split-palmette interlace 19.1 x 13.5 cm. max. Footnotes: Provenance Christie's South Kensington, Indian and Islamic Works of Art, 20 April 2007, lot 310. The present lot is an example of the moulded cuenca (hollow) technique, where patterns are indented into the surface of the tile with raised outlines that provide a border to maintain separation of colours. An identical tile is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (Accession No. 2011.153), which bears the Nasrid motto 'there is no conqueror but God.'
