HARVARD COLLEGE, WITH DISTINGUISHED HARVARD PROVENANCE. Pietas et gratulatio collegii Cantabrigiensis apud Novanglos. Boston: J. Green and J. Russell, 1762. 4to (248 x 200 mm). Errata slip mounted on last blank leaf. Contemporary half sheep and marbled boards. Joints cracked through, heavily rubbed and chipped at corners, older re-stitching, top margin slightly trimmed, dampstaining from top edges, scattered browning. Provenance: Stephen Sewall (1734-1804, Harvard Professor of Hebrew and Oriental Languages; ownership inscription on title dated 1762); Timothy Alden (1771-1839, Harvard graduate and founder of Alleghany College; ownership inscription on title dated 1796, stating 'bought of Mr. Sewall, 10 June'); Charles M. Bakewell (1867-1957, Harvard PhD and Connecticut Congressman; gift inscription from his Grandmother on the dedication page, dated 1896). A well-provenanced example of this publication, a compendium of obsequies in tribute to the English crown — something common among English universities of the day, and in particular after the death of George II and accession of George III. Its publication was suggested by Governor Francis Bernard of Massachusetts, a royalist hardliner who imposed many of the taxes that stirred the colonists toward independence. His return to England in 1769 was celebrated by Bostonians, but to his credit, he designed Harvard Hall. Evans 8877; Sabin 30754.
