Letitia Marion Hamilton R.H.A. (Irish, 1878-1964) Ca' d'Oro (Palazzo Santa Sofia), Venice signed with initials 'LMH' (lower right); further signed and inscribed 'GADORO PALLAZO [sic]/VENICE/By Letitia M Hamilton RHA/Woodville Lucan' (on a label attached verso) oil on canvas 56 x 66 cm. (22 x 26 in.) Footnotes: Provenance Gifted to the parents of the present owner as a wedding gift, 1960s, and thence by family descent Private Collection, U.K. Letitia Hamilton was born in County Meath in 1878, the younger sister of the artist Eva Hamilton and a cousin of the watercolour artist, Rose Barton. She studied art under Sir William Orpen, and subsequently moved to Belgium to study under Frank Brangwyn, before attending the Slade School of Art in London. She first exhibited at the Royal Hibernian Academy in 1909 and continued to exhibit there until, rarely missing a year. In 1924 she contributed three Venetian scenes to the Royal Hibernian Academy and that same year she held her first exhibition of Venice paintings in Dublin with her sister Eva. She later established a studio in Venice and scenes of Venice and Siena feature prominently in her oeuvre. She exhibited extensively throughout her career at the Salon in Paris, the Goupil Gallery and Beaux Arts Gallery in London and at the Exhibition of Irish Art in Brussels in 1930. In Dublin she started exhibiting with the Dawson Gallery in 1956 and her solo show at the gallery in 1963 was a complete sell-out. She died the following year and that same year a major retrospective exhibition of her work was held at the Godolphin Gallery in Dublin.
