Terence P Flanagan R.H.A., P.P.R.U.A. (Irish, 1929-2011) Cloonagh Bawn signed 'T.P. FLANAGAN' (lower right) and inscribed with title 'Cloonagh bawn' (verso) oil on board 63.3 x 76 cm. (24 7/8 x 29 7/8 in.) Footnotes: Provenance Private Collection, Northern Ireland As an artist T.P. Flanagan excelled at capturing the mood and atmosphere of the Irish landscape drawing inspiration from the lands of his native Fermanagh and the neighbouring County Sligo. His technique and skill of using thinned out layers and washes of paint more akin at times to watercolour than oil painting perfectly capture and evoke the soft atmospheric conditions of the Irish landscape along the western seaboard. According to his friend Seamus Heaney with whom he worked closely his paintings incline 'to the lyric and the opulent' with the artist being in tune 'with the notion of an earthly paradise and hence the radiance of the painting is entirely this-worldly'.
