Frank McKelvey R.H.A., R.U.A. (Irish, 1895-1974) Figures by the Shore signed and dated 'FRANK MCKELVEY/1921' (lower left) oil on canvas 38 x 50.5 cm. (15 x 19 7/8 in.) Footnotes: Provenance Sale; Morgan O'Driscoll, Cork, 29 April 2019, lot 23, where acquired by the present owner Private Collection, Ireland A landscape and portrait painter, Frank McKelvey was born in Belfast on June 3rd 1895. He worked as a poster designer before attending the Belfast School of Art and in 1917 he won the prestigious Taylor Art competition in Dublin. He first exhibited at the Royal Hibernian Academy in 1918 and showed there every year until 1973. In a 1923 issue of The Studio he was included, alongside Paul Henry and James Humbert Craig, in a 'distinct group of artists whose landscapes, though by no means emotional, are always most obviously sincere, closely observed, firmly and cleanly handled'. S.B. Kennedy, in his biography Frank McKelvey: A Painter in his Prime writes that 'he helped to forge a new and distinct way of representing the Irish scene which is the nearest approximation we have to a distinct Irish school of painting.'
