Nine Copeland Christmas and New Year plates, mid-19th century
Nine Copeland Christmas and New Year plates, mid-19th century Of gently lobed form, printed and hand coloured with wide borders of berried holly, the centres with a sprig of mistletoe tied with a blue ribbon, eight inscribed in gold 'A MERRY CHRISTMAS TO YOU', one reading 'A HAPPY NEW YEAR TO YOU', 24.8cm diam, printed green factory marks, registration lozenge marks for 6 December 1849, pattern number 8295 (9) Footnotes: Victorian Britain became enamoured with the idea of Christmas in the 1840s and 1850s. An image of the Royal Family, including Prince Albert around a Christmas tree, first published in 1848 by the Illustrated London News heralded a new tradition and aesthetic still replicated today. Copeland were catering to a growing and increasingly wealthy upper-middle class market that wished to celebrate the season in fashion.
