Footnotes: Please note this Lot is to be sold at No Reserve. 本拍品不設底價 十八/十九世紀(煙草盒署年1823) 日本銅漆肖像獎章 及銅鎏金煙草盒 一組三件 Provenance: Ben Janssens Oriental Art, London 來源: 倫敦古董商 Ben Janssens Oriental Art Published, Exhibited and Illustrated: Ben Janssens Oriental Art, TEFAF 2019, London, 2019 (the tobacco box) 展覽著錄: Ben Janssens Oriental Art,《TEFAF 2019》,倫敦,2019年(煙草盒) Dutch East India merchants working in Japan often ordered lacquerware for personal use. Reede van de Parkeler, the head of Deshima from 1786 to 1788, may have started the trend for copper oval plaques when he sent two to his father in 1793. These plaques, lacquered with images of famous Europeans and Roman emperors from the French publication L'Europe Illustré (published between 1755 and 1765), marked the first use of Western designs in Japanese lacquer work. This innovation was highly successful and spurred the production of plaques adorned with Western battle scenes and city views. Compare with a similar Japanese lacquered oval panel, depicting John Locke, late 18h century, in the Victoria and Albert Museum, illustrated in Encounters: The Meeting of Asia and Europe 1500-1800, London, 2004, p.248, no.18.17.
