A GILT-BRONZE STANDING FIGURE OF UDHYANA BUDDHA Ming Dynasty The standing figure dressed in all-enveloping, elaborately pleated robes, with the right hand in abhaya mudra, the left hand in varada mudra, the head crowned by an elaborate hair arrangement with pleated strands and a high chignon, the face with a benevolent expression flanked by two elongated earlobes, with display stand and box. 18cm (7 1/8in) high. A copy was brought to China by Kumārajīva 鳩摩羅什 in 405 CE. The feature of the rounded collar of the present lot is commonly presented in the Qing dynasty Udhyana Buddha. See a related gilt-bronze figure of Udhyana Buddha, 14th century, in the collection of the Minneapolis Institute of Arts (acc. no. 59.5). Compare with a related Udhyana type gilt copper alloy figure of Buddha, 18th century, which was sold at Bonhams New York, 17 September 2014, lot 57. Buyers' Premium and Charges
For all Sales categories, buyer's premium excluding Cars, Motorbikes, Wine, Whisky and Coin & Medal sales, will be as follows:
Buyer's Premium Rates
28% on the first £40,000 of the hammer price;
27% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £40,000 up to and including £800,000;
21% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £800,000 up to and including £4,500,000;
and 14.5% of the hammer price of any amounts in excess of £4,500,000.
