Description
Richard Ansdell, RA (British, 1815-1885) The fruit sellers signed and dated 'Richd Ansdell 1861' (lower right) oil on canvas 82 x 64cm (32 5/16 x 25 3/16in). Footnotes: This is one of Richard Ansdell's vibrant Spanish canvases. He gained so much inspiration from his visits to Spain. It was fashionable at the time in the art world to favour Spain as the vibrant 'exotic' light of the atmosphere was very appealing to the viewing public before widespread travel became available to all. He visited Spain twice; once in 1856 with John Phillip RA and again in 1857 on his own. It was usual for Phillip and Ansdell to corroborate on paintings, with Phillip depicting the figures, and Ansdell depicting the animals. They would travel around on mules with all their artistic equipment, probably overdressed for the climate (no casual clothing in those days). They would find a port such as Cadiz and send finished paintings back to England by boat. As this work was painted in 1861, it was most likely executed or finished once he got back to his studio in London. Richard Ansdell brought back lots of props such as mule bridles and tack, panniers, ladies' shawls, etc. which he used extensively over the following years. Photography was not available. As a footnote, Richard Ansdell often depicted Spanish folk smoking: including young boys. The mule depicted here has the traditional tack including tassels over the eyes to keep out the flies and probably wasps too as the paniers contained fruit. Seville oranges are still today highly prized and this is an interesting example of how they were transported at that time. There are also lemons and gourds for sale. Notable features of this painting are the meticulous handling of the intricate basket weaving which Ansdell would have tried hard to understand in order to depict it so accurately, and the background distance with the two figures in avid conversation. Buyers' Premium and Charges

Buyer's Premium Rates
28% on the first £40,000 of the hammer price;
27% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £40,000 up to and including £800,000;
21% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £800,000 up to and including £4,500,000;
and 14.5% of the hammer price of any amounts in excess of £4,500,000.
