PHOTOGRAPHY - FARQUHAR FAMILY Six albums of photographs (carte-de-visite portraits; groups, Crystal Palace, country house scenes) compiled by, and relating to the Farquhar family, of Whiteway, Devon, and descendents, comprising: Two albums, compiled by Harvie M. Farquhar (1816-1887), approximately 175 photographic carte-de-visite portraits (many of his children and family, others of neighbours and friends) by various photographers including Camille Silvy (of Alfred Farquhar), 10 larger images (including Croquet scene 1863, West Harling and Letton houses in Norfolk, 2 views of Crystal Palace at Sydenham by P.H. Delamotte), and approximately 15O other smaller arranged 'artistically' on the page, the C-de-Vs loose mounted, others pasted down, most with sitter identified, often with cut signature pasted below image, contemporary morocco, 'M.F.H.' initials on upper covers, g.e., rubbed, [c.1860-1870] [PICTORIALISM] Album of 98 views by one of the Farquhar family (possibly Ernest), including Scotland, Jersey and Guernsey, Freshwater in the Isle of Wight, interiors in Eton Square, London, bromide or platinum, loose mounted, each captioned and dated in pencil on mount, images 100 x 150mm., contemporary morocco-backed cloth, [c.1892-1900] [FARQUHAR (HENRY AND RUPERT] Album, 20 sheets each mounted with photographs of the two Farquhar boys (H, later ambassador to Sweden, 1894-1953; R, died on the Western Front, aged 20, 1897-1917) as children, often in fancy dress (Japanese, Greek Brigand, Two Gentleman of Verona, Scottish kilts, bathing costumes, etc.), sometimes as pages at weddings, or performances for pageants at the Royal Albert Hall, or holidaying, etc, many pages embellished with watercolour decorations or pasted-in watercolours of the children at play or in costumes, approximately 20 photographs and several programmes loosely inserted, contemporary morocco, gilt lettered 'Harold and Rupert' on upper cover, g.e., upper joint split, [1994-1906] Album of 192 Farquhar family photographs, mostly on holiday (Scotland, Saltram in Devon, Spain, but including 'arrival of Kitchener', 'H and R. celebrating the Relief of Mafeking', standing with Redvers Buller, the 1902 naval review, etc.), gelatin silver prints, loose mounted 4 per page, captioned on mount, original cloth, gilt lettered 'M.T.F.' on upper cover, [1900-1903] FARQUHAR (HAROLD) Album recording Harold's time at Eton and Oxford University, mostly relating to his rowing and horse racing activities, approx. 6 relating to his WWI service in the Coldstream Guards, final leaf of press cuttings relating to his marriage in 1918, approximately 80 gelatin silver prints on c.25 sheets, most captioned on mount, contemporary half morocco, [1910-1918], various sizes, [c.1860-1918] (6) Footnotes: A good group of 'country house' photo albums relating to the Farquhar family, including some 180 carte-de-visites of the 1860s (photographers including Camille Silvy), several portraits of houses associated with the family or that of the Nugents in the 60s, and 2 images of Crystal Palace by P.H. The later albums include a charming record in photography and watercolour of the childhood of two brothers, Harold and Rupert, usually attired in fancy dress (or in very early childhood in dresses). Harold would go on to a successful career as an Ambassador, whilst Rupert was tragically killed in action, aged only 20, on the Western Front in 1917. Buyers' Premium and Charges

Buyer's Premium Rates
28% on the first £40,000 of the hammer price;
27% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £40,000 up to and including £800,000;
21% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £800,000 up to and including £4,500,000;
and 14.5% of the hammer price of any amounts in excess of £4,500,000.
