DICKENS (CHARLES) Autograph note signed ('Charles Dickens') to Ary Scheffer, '...This set of my books with admiration of his noble genius...', one page on pale blue paper, light dust-staining, creased at folds, 8vo (188 x 121mm.), Paris, April 1856 Footnotes: DICKENS PRESENTS A SET OF HOUSEHOLD WORDS TO THE PAINTER OF HIS PORTRAIT WHILST WORKING ON LITTLE DORRIT. Ary Scheffer (1795-1858), the Dutch-French Romantic painter, painted Dickens' portrait after meeting him in Paris in October 1855. Sittings began in November of that year but Dickens soon became frustrated with having to '...sit, sit, sit, with Little Dorrit on my mind, and the Christmas business too... And the crowning feature is that I do not discern the slightest resemblance...' (letter to John Forster, Pilgrim Letters, Vol.7, p.756). Far from considering Scheffer a '...noble genius...', Dickens amusingly expressed his frustration at the lengthy sittings and the poor likeness to several correspondents, including Wilkie Collins (19 January 1856) and Miss Burdett-Coutts (10 January 1856), even describing it as a 'nightmare portrait' in a letter to Forster (6 January 1856). The picture was greeted with guarded success at the Royal Academy, despite Eastlake referring to Scheffer as a 'distinguished man of genius' in his speech at the RA dinner in May 1856. The portrait is now in the collection of the National Portrait Gallery, London (NPG 315). Dickens had expressed his intention to present Scheffer with a complete set of Household Words in a letter to W.H. Wills of 25 November 1855 (Pilgrim Letters, Vol.7, p.754). The double volumes of Household Words were first issued in February 1855, with the sixth volume issued a year later. Our letter is not published in the Pilgrim edition of Charles Dickens' letters. Buyers' Premium and Charges
For all Sales categories, buyer's premium excluding Cars, Motorbikes, Wine, Whisky and Coin & Medal sales, will be as follows:
Buyer's Premium Rates
28% on the first £40,000 of the hammer price;
27% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £40,000 up to and including £800,000;
21% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £800,000 up to and including £4,500,000;
and 14.5% of the hammer price of any amounts in excess of £4,500,000.
A 3rd party bidding platform fee of 4% of the Hammer Price for Buyers using the following bidding platforms will be added to the invoices of successful Buyers for auctions starting on or after 6th July 2024 – Invaluable; Live Auctioneers; The Saleroom; Lot-tissimo.
VAT at the current rate of 20% will be added to the Buyer's Premium and charges excluding Artists Resale Right.
