RUSKIN (JOHN) A bound volume of engraved views after Clarkson Frederick Stanfield, INSCRIBED BY RUSKIN TO HIS FRIEND 'MARY CONSTANCE HILLIARD, with John Ruskin's dear love' on the front free endpaper, 73 engraved plates on india-proof paper mounted on stiff card, a few with light spotting, contemporary green morocco gilt, g.e., neatly rebacked preserving original spine (lettered 'Stanfield's Views'), large 8vo (230 x 155mm.), [1860s] Footnotes: A fine association set of engraved views of Europe by Clarkson Stanfield, inscribed with 'dear love' by Ruskin to Mary Constance Hilliard (1852-1915), one of his closest female friends. He first met her in 1863 when she was eleven, and she accompanied him (with her mother) on tours to France, Italy and Switzerland on three occasions between 1866 and 1870, and in later life they were in regular contact as both were connected to Joan Severn. The book was gifted just two months after the death of Clarkson Stanfield, whom Ruskin called 'the leader of the British Realists' and, next to Turner, 'the noblest master of cloud forms of all our artists' (Modern Painters, quoted in ODNB). Buyers' Premium and Charges
For all Sales categories, buyer's premium excluding Cars, Motorbikes, Wine, Whisky and Coin & Medal sales, will be as follows:
Buyer's Premium Rates
28% on the first £40,000 of the hammer price;
27% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £40,000 up to and including £800,000;
21% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £800,000 up to and including £4,500,000;
and 14.5% of the hammer price of any amounts in excess of £4,500,000.
A 3rd party bidding platform fee of 4% of the Hammer Price for Buyers using the following bidding platforms will be added to the invoices of successful Buyers for auctions starting on or after 6th July 2024 – Invaluable; Live Auctioneers; The Saleroom; Lot-tissimo.
VAT at the current rate of 20% will be added to the Buyer's Premium and charges excluding Artists Resale Right.
