LYSONS (SAMUEL) A Collection of Gloucestershire Antiquities, FIRST EDITION, with 3 ORIGINAL PENCIL AND WASH DRAWINGS, mounted on card and loosely inserted, etched title, 110 etched plates (some hand-coloured or with aquatint), some spotting, browning to text and a few plates (principally the coloured ones), publisher's roan-backed cloth, gilt lettered spine, covers partially faded and slightly damp-stained, spine worn, tall folio, T. Caddell and W. Davies, 1804 Footnotes: THE LYSONS FAMILY COPY, WITH THREE ORIGINAL DRAWINGS OF GLOUCESTERSHIRE CHURCHES. Two of the pencil drawings are of Quenington Church, captioned 'South[-North] Door of Queenington [sic] Church', mounted on card with grey wash borders and measuring 187 x 148mm. and 210 x 150mm. respectively. The resulting engravings by Lysons were published in his 'Description of the church of Quenington in the county of Gloucester', which appeared in Archaeologia, vol. 10 (1792), pp.128-30, and are referred to by Lucy Abel Smith, in her discussion of the iconography of 'The north and south doorways of Quenington church' (in Bristol and Gloucestershire Notes and Queries, Note 44, 2016). The third drawing, uncaptioned, is of 'The Chancel of Elkstone Church', and appears to be a preparatory drawing for the larger etching with aquatint dated 1791, possibly found in either the 1803 edition or in large paper copies. A slightly smaller etched version is included as plate 9 in the present copy. Provenance: Samuel Lysons; J.M.C. Lysons (1924-2018); by descent to the present owner.
