FRANKLIN B. DE HAVEN (AMERICAN, 1856-1934) NOCTURNE, ALTERNATELY TITLED LANDSCAPE
FRANKLIN B. DE HAVEN (AMERICAN, 1856-1934) NOCTURNE, ALTERNATELY TITLED LANDSCAPE Signed and dated 'F. De Haven. 1903' (lower left), identified on an exhibition label from the Salmagundi Club (see below) (affixed to the stretcher). Oil on canvas, 12 x 14 in. (30.6 x 35.8 cm), framed. Footnotes: EXHIBITED Salmagundi Club Oil Exhibition No. 1, New York, February 14-26, 1903. N.B. Franklin De Haven is listed as having exhibited only one painting at the Salmagundi Club in 1903. It is recorded in The Salmagundi Club Painting Exhibition Records 1889-1939 as Nocturne, a title that seems appropriate for this painting en grisaille. The fragmentary Salmagundi exhibition label on the stretcher of this painting bears the handwritten generic title Landscape, which we offer here as the alternate title. OVERALL CONDITION: Canvas with a colorman's stencil from W. Schaus, 204 Fifth Avenue, New York, on the reverse. The painting was not removed from the frame, which is glazed, during cataloging. However, under UV light no retouch was visible. There is minor, stable craquelure and a line of minimal frame abrasion to the lower left edge. Framed (under glass) 17 1/2 x 19 1/2 x 2 1/2 in. This condition report is provided for your convenience based on the opinion of our cataloguers. It is not a comprehensive condition report and if you require more detailed information, please contact us. Lots are sold on an 'as is' basis, with all faults and imperfections.
