Jean-Marie Périer (born 1940) Françoise Hardy, 1967, printed later edition no.7/10, c-type print, flush-mounted to aluminium, signed 'J M Perier' (lower right), inscribed 'Françoise Hardy. Paris. Mai 1969.' (lower centre), and numbered '7/10 120/120' (lower left), with artist's stamp (lower right), framed but unglazed 127.5 x 126.4cm (50 1/4 x 49 3/4in). Footnotes: Françoise Hardy rose to prominence during France's 'yé-yé' era, the fusion of French pop and American rock 'n' roll that captivated audiences on both sides of the Atlantic. Many believe the finest photographs of the singer, actress, and style icon were taken by Jean-Marie Périer. The present lot is one of his particularly striking examples. Taken in Paris, Périer captures Hardy staring directly into the lens. The image's stark simplicity and intimate feel reflect the deep trust and mutual respect between Hardy and Périer. Périer photographed numerous celebrities, but his bond with Hardy was unique, resulting in around 200 images. His secret as a photographer lay in his warm approach, which allowed him to become a trusted companion to the stars. 'What immediately struck me about Françoise was that she had no awareness of her incredible beauty. For a photographer, it's an ideal situation, and for the young man I was, it was a real shock.' - Jean-Marie Perier This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: AR TP AR Goods subject to Artists Resale Right Additional Premium.
