A George III decorative stay Of large triangular tapering form, carved with the makers name John Bulley and dated 1792 with finely carved decoration throughout together with a fine George III carved apple or cheese scoop dated 1774, 35.2cm long, 15.8cm long (2) Footnotes: A busk is a stiffener for inserting in the front of a corset -traditionally in parts of rural England they were carved and offered as love tokens. They would often be engraved with messages, incised dates or initials. According to Pinto, most were triangular in section but some were completely flat. For further examples of busk stays see O. Evan-Thomas, Domestic Utensils of Wood 1973, EP Publishing, p136. For the apple or cheese scoop, a similar example sold Sotheby's 30th November to 1st December 1983The W.J Shepherd Collection of Treen Lot 723.
