BONAPARTE, JOSEPHINE (DE BEAUHARNAIS). 1763-1814. Autograph Note (unsigned) in French, in the hand of Empress Josephine, to Princess Augusta of Bavaria, 1 p, 8vo (195 x 125 mm), Paris, February 27, on note paper with blind-decorated borders, with note in an unknown hand in lower margin stating that the letter was sent to Princess Augusta, husband of Prince Eugene. Together with an old typed translation from the Albert J. Stevens collection of historical documents. Laid down on paper, stains around top and bottom edges. Josephine writes (translated): 'My dear girl — The departure of Prince Borghese gives me a new occasion for writing you and I take advantage of it with pleasure in order to prove to you how friendly I have been.' According to the anonymous note, the recipient was Josephine's daughter-in-law, married to her son by her first marriage, Eugene de Beauharnais. The Prince Borghese whom she mentions may have been Camillo Borghese, Prince of Sulmona and Rossano, who was Napoleon's brother-in-law. Alternatively, the letter may refer to Camillo's younger brother Francesco (also Prince Borghese) who married one of Josephine's chief ladies-in-waiting, Adèle de la Rochefoucauld.
