BENCHLEY, PETER. 1940-2006. Jaws. Garden City, NY: Doubleday & Company, 1974. 8vo. Original black cloth; original dust jacket (light wear at extreme ends). FIRST EDITION, early printing INSCRIBED BY BENCHLEY TO 'JOHN STEVENS,' IN FIRST STATE WRAPPER with $6.95 price and 'J' above but later state without '044' at p 311. Benchley's best-selling novel was the basis for the 1975 blockbuster film of the same name directed by Steven Spielberg. Benchley later regretted writing the original book as it encouraged a widespread fear of sharks. He would spend the rest of his life promoting the cause of ocean conservation. The recipient is possibly noted shark biologist John Stevens, who has posited that humans are not normal prey for sharks. Lot to be sold without reserve.
