AN AUGUST BELMONT SIGNED STOCK ASSIGNMENT. BELMONT, AUGUSTUS. 1813-1890. Document Signed ('August Belmont'), assigning 50 shares of New York & Harlem Rail-Road Company stock to August S. Tobias, 1 p, oblong 8vo (75 x 170 mm), New York, December 15, 1837, matted and framed to 380 x 530 mm. Provenance: Private Collection, Beverly Hills, California. August Belmont's career began in Europe as a clerk for the Rothschild family. He made his mark in 1837 when, on a stopover in New York on his way to Cuba, he found himself in the middle of the Panic of 1837. Learning that the Rothschild's agent in America had collapsed under debts of $7 million, Belmont made the executive decision to stay in New York and take over the Rothschild's interest, eventually becoming their new agent in America. After a successful financial career (and after his naturalization), Belmont became heavily involved in party politics, becoming the chair of the Democratic National Committee and transforming that position from a largely ceremonial one to an important power player in presidential politics.
