POE, EDGAR ALLAN. 1809-1849. The Conchologist's First Book, or, a System of Testaceous Malacology. Philadelphia: Haswell, Barrington and Haswell, 1840. 8vo (170 x 106 mm). 12 lithographic plates. Contemporary quarter sheep and publisher's printed boards. Light wear and soiling to covers, scattered foxing. Provenance: W.C. Sturgis (bookplate, pencil inscription). SECOND EDITION. Generally regarded as a piracy of Thomas Brown's 1833 The Conchologist's Text-Book, with an added preface by Poe and new plates. Poe denied the charge of plagiarism, saying he translated the text from Cuvier and worked with Professor Thomas Wyatt. In fact, Wyatt's text had largely been lifted from Brown's work. See Hartman & Canny, p 41; Norman 1720 (both for first edition of 1939).
