A Napoleon III ormolu mounted mahogany meuble d'appui or side cabinet by Henri-Auguste Fourdinois (1830-1907) Circa 1865, the two door panels probably replaced at a later date The frieze centred by a shaped panel mounted with a central roundel depicting in relief a bearded classical male bust in profile adorned by scrolled stylised foliage and palmettes, over a pair of brass grill inset doors, enclosing two adjustable shelves, flanked by fluted pilasters headed by floral, lotus leaf and palmette mounted capitals, over twin handled urn mounts, on a plinth base, 116cm wide x 41.5cm deep x 103cm high, (45 1/2in wide x 16in deep x 40 1/2in high) Footnotes: Provenance Property of a private UK collector. Henri-Auguste Fourdinois (1830-1907) continued the business founded in 1835 by his father, Alexandre-Georges Fourdinois (1799-1871). They were the most celebrated cabinet makers of the mid-19th century in Paris, specialising in carved furniture. They participated in the International Exhibitions and their sideboard was one of the leading French exhibits at the most famous 1851 Great Exhibition in London, at which event they received a special medal. Henri-Auguste Fourdinois continued to exhibit his masterpieces in Paris in 1855, later in London, 1862, and then at the Paris Exposition Universelle of 1867. At the latter exhibition he obtained the Grand Prix for a cabinet which was subsequently acquired by the Victoria and Albert Museum. In Paris in 1878, Henri-Auguste was even awarded the Médaille d'honneur.
