Follower of Nicholas Dixon (English, fl. 1665-1670): Portrait of an unknown gentleman in armour, oval on ivory, together with two further miniature portraits of gentleman on card, one thought to be the poet Thomas Shadwell, the other Charles Pratt, Earl of Camden The first two probably late 17th century, the last probably mid 18th century the first portrait with the sitter depicted with flowing hair and lace jabot before a cloudy blue sky, mounted within a contemporary white metal oval frame with scrolling suspension, the rear with later (probably 20th century) floral painted backing, the second oval portrait, probably Circle of Samuel Cooper (English, 1609-1672), painted oil on card depicting a gentleman thought to be the 17th century Poet Laureate, circa 1689, mounted in an ebonised moulded frame, the third tondo portrait of a gentleman in ink (grisaille), previously unattributed but perhaps attributable to James Ferguson (Scottish, 1710-1776) thought to be of Charles Pratt, Earl of Camden (1714-1794), Recorder of Bath, Lord Chancellor (1766-1770), The first portrait, oval, 4.7cm x 4cm (frame 7cm x 5.5cm), the second, oval 6.5cm x 5.4cm, (frame, 12cm x 12cm), the third portrait, tondo 5.3cm diameter (frame, 9cm diameter) (3) Footnotes: The items that comprise this lot containing ivory have been registered in accordance with the CITES Ivory Act (section 10), Ref: 4LKU9NS1 (Oval portrait of a man in armour with lace jabot, after Nicholas Dixon) Provenance Property of a Lady For a more finely painted comparable to the first portrait miniature offered in this lot now in the permanent collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum see: https://collections.vam.ac.uk/item/O1067920/an-unknown-man-portrait-miniature-nicholas-dixon/ This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: Y Ф Y Subject to CITES regulations when exporting items outside of the UK, see clause 13.
