Of Russian historical interest: A rare and probably unique German painted, carved and composition diorama together with an associated mid 19th century Northern European mahogany console table with marble top The diorama by repute commissioned by Ferdinand Hansen of the Romanoff Caviar Company for the company board room, New York, USA Depicting a scene on the coast of the Caspian Sea and modelled with seven fishermen hauling in nets of sturgeon to harvest their caviar before a painted seascape background, mounted within a stained wood and glazed rectangular case, the rear with applied paper label marked Walldorf u. Scharstein Modellbau. Hamburg 5, Lindea Strasse 61. and white painted mark Made in German, with later electrical light fitting, together with a printed leaflet with facsimile copies of the Walldorf label to the rear of the case, an original promotional photograph showing a prize Beluga sturgeon weighing 200lbs caught at Astrakhan, headquarters of the Romanoff Caviar Company and a printed advert for Fresh Romanoff Malossol Caviar for the Romanoff Caviar Company, the console table, possibly German, the top above a plain frieze, the front supports as fluted ionic pilasters on horizontally reeded block feet, the plain rear supports united by a deep stretcher, the case, 61cm high, 126cm wide, 53cm deep, the table, 96cm high, 129cm wide, 60cm deep (2) Footnotes: Provenance Property of a UK collector.
