A pair of George III mahogany side chairs Circa 1795, after a Gillows design and also probably made by the Gillows firm Each with a tablet toprail above a flowerhead-centred vertical trellis splat flanked by Corinthian columns, with fluted columnar stiles, on ring turned fluted tapering front legs each headed by a spiral rosette, terminating in peg feet, each: 55cm wide x 52cm deep x 91.5cm high, (21 1/2in wide x 20in deep x 36in high) (2) Footnotes: Provenance The present lot was purchased soon after being offered Sotheby's, London, 2 May 1997, Fine English Furniture, lot 126. The Sotheby's footnote references a set of four painted and parcel gilt chairs of identical design which had previously sold in their rooms, 16 July 1982, lot 144. Thereafter, property of a private UK collector. A colour plate of a Gillows design, dated 1795, for a closely comparable armchair to the two chairs forming the offered lot features in Gillow Furniture Designs, 1760-1800, ed. by L. Boynton, 1995, Royston, pl. 30 (B). Also, a design for a very similar armchair, which appears to be referred to as the 'Garforth pattern' or 'diamond pattern back' chair, was produced by Gillows in 1795. This drawing is illustrated in S. Stuart, Gillows of Lancaster and London, 1730-1840, Vol. I, 2008, Woodbridge, pl. 165, p. 195.
