Jean Jules Salmson (French, 1823-1902): A pair of patinated bronze figures of 'Le Guerrier Arabe' and 'La Porteuse' Probably late 19th/early 20th century The male figure clad in a draped robe with a robe tied headdress, a straw hat and rifle slung across his back, a sash to his waist supporting two pistols and sword, his female companion similarly clad in a robe with robe tied headdress holding a pot in her left hand, both standing on circular naturalistic bases signed SALMSON, and raised on rouge marble circular plinths, 63cm and 60cm high approximately including plinth bases (2) Footnotes: Jean Jules Salmson was a prestigious French sculptor who specialised in depicting Orientalist subject matter although he had a broader repertoire also casting historical figures such as Shakespeare, Rubens, Hamlet and Byron.
