A pair of Empire mahogany, bois clair (satinbirch) and amaranth inlaid chaises or side chairs 1800-1815, possibly Italian Each with a shaped and curved toprail inlaid with opposing palmettes flanking a central star, above a splat inlaid with an anthemion and husk motif, on square tapering legs, with splayed rear legs, 50cm wide x 49cm deep x 89cm high, (19 1/2in wide x 19in deep x 35in high) (2) Footnotes: Provenance Property of a private UK collector. A pair of Continental (probably French) mahogany and satinwood bergeres, dating to circa 1800, with comparable Neoclassical inlay to that featuring on the present chairs sold Sotheby's, New York, 19 May 2006, Fine French and Continental Furniture, lot 173. A further related side chair (circa 1805) which is doubtless part of a larger set of seat furniture, with Neoclassical inlay of a darker wood set within a lighter timber similar to that of the offered examples, forms part of the collection at Malmaison. This chair appears illustrated in A. Gonzalez-Palacios, The French Empire Style, 1966, fig. 63, p. 141.
