UNIDENTIFIED ARTIST Landscapes, Korea, 19th/20th century
UNIDENTIFIED ARTIST Landscapes, Korea, 19th/20th century Ink and light color on silk, ten-panel screen (divided in two), each inscribed with two seals, including one reading, Eun-gye. 42 3/4 x 12 1/2in (108.6 x 31.8cm) each Footnotes: Provenance: Private collection in Connecticut, formed in Korea during 1953-57 when the current owner was teaching at a university and working in Cultural Affairs at the American Embassy. Note: The artist using, 'Eun-gye,' as his style name has been identified in a record as Yi Cheong-jing (1792-1862), but the record is not yet confirmed as true in the Korean academia, due to the limited number of comparable examples. Korea has so far identified two true-view landscape folding screens as works by Eun-gye, which are housed in two museums. The artist is described as a professional painter at one of the museums while as a literati artist at the other, making the identification of the artist more complicated. (Reference: Kho, Youen-hee, 'A Study on Twelve Panel-Screen Painting of 'Wuyi Mountain's Nine Bends' at the Gahoe Minhwa Museum,' December 2021) For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com For further information about this lot please visit the lot listing
