Désirée Dolron (born 1963) 'Alicia Alonso' (from 'Te dí todos mis sueños'), 2002 Silver dye bleach print, printed 2003; flush-mounted to aluminum, a Shine Gallery label, signed, titled, dated, and editioned '1/10' in ink, and a Michael Hoppen Gallery label on the reverse, framed. 19 3/4 x 19 3/4 in. (50.2 x 50.2 cm.) Footnotes: Provenance Michael Hoppen Gallery, London Literature Desiree Dolron, The Hague Museum of Photography, 2005, p. 143 Note Prima Ballerina Assoluta and choreographer Alicia Alonso was an instrumental figure in twentieth-century dance. Known for her dramatic performances in Giselle and Swan Lake while she was a member of the American Ballet Theater, she went on to found the Ballet Nacional de Cuba in 1955. With support and funding from Fidel Castro, Alonso sought to democratize ballet, training local dancers and cultivating local audiences. Alonso's radical approach to an elite art form within a socialist framework brought Cuba to the forefront of international ballet. In Dolron's series 'Te di todos mis sueños' or 'I give you all my dreams,' the photographer honored Alonso's revolutionary artistic legacy.
