German Fishtail Matchlock Musket, early 17th century. 46 5/8 in., .72 caliber octagonal barrel, the left side of the breech marked with a stylized 'E' being the mark for the city of Emden, Germany, and the top flat with a sunken cartouche 'CL,' the muzzle with sculpted iron blade sight; rectangular lock plate with crown over 'CM' cartouche; blackened beech stock marked '18' above the lock plate; sheet iron trigger guard and barrel band; wood rammer with iron tip. Overall lg. 61 in. Condition: Iron is mostly bright with scattered light brown toning; stock has worm holes and evidence of restoration throughout, traces of original blackening remain. Footnotes: Provenance Little John's Auction, August 28-29, 1994, Lot 110. The Armory of the city of Emden, Germany, that originally had about 200 such muskets which were sold in the 1960s.
